Mary Mary is an American gospel duo.

Band History

Erica and Tina Atkins grew up together with seven other siblings in Inglewood, California. Her parents were gospel singers, and they sang as children in the church choir. Together, they also had a television appearance in the Bobby Jones Gospel show. Later the two sisters appeared in two gospel stage shows by Michael Matthews, and each of them worked B- field as a background singer for various artists from the R &.

A meeting with producer Warryn Campbell led then to the merger as a duo under the name Mary Mary, a reference to the two women named Mary in the Bible, the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. This was followed by their first joint production. With contributions to the soundtrack of Dr. Dolittle and The Prince of Egypt in 1998 they won the attention of the Columbia label, which in 2000 released their debut album Thankful was released. It stood out in that it was not a traditional gospel album, but a crossover album with other directions of black music such as R & B, Hip Hop and Soul. With the first single Shackles ( Praise You ) she immediately had her breakthrough. It was also a big hit in Europe and came among others in the UK among the top 5 in the U.S., he was a number-one Gospelhit and a top 10 hit in the R & B charts.

Although the album Thankful was only ranked 59 in the U.S. album charts, sold by the end of 2001 but over a million times and got it platinum. At the Grammy Awards 2001, her debut was awarded as Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.

Internationally, the album was indeed their only success, but in their home they could with the albums Incredible (2002) and Mary Mary (2005) firmly established in the gospel field. Both albums reached # 1 on the gospel and the top 10 R & B album charts and sold more than 500,000 copies. With In the Morning, Dance Dance Dance, Heaven and Yesterday they had four more number-one hits Gospel at this time. Moreover, the two sisters founded their own families: Erica had her producer Warryn Campbell and Tina married a drummer who is also called random Campbell, and both had brought young into the world.

Followed in 2008 by another very successful album with The Sound. With room 7 it reached its best ever placing in the official U.S. album charts. In the gospel album charts, it was more than half a year at No. 1 in the category Best R & B Gospel Album, it was one of three Grammy nominations in 2009 for Mary Mary. One of them, through the song Get Up as the best Gospel performance of the year, led to her second Grammy win.
