Mary of Clopas

The Holy Mary of Cleophas or Mary of Clopas is mentioned in the New Testament as a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth.

Biblical lore and legend

The Greek text does not specify whether it is the daughter, wife or even mother of Cleopas, in the Christian tradition it is consistently regarded as the wife of Cleophas. By Richard Bauckham Cleophas is equated with Cleopas, who was a relative of Jesus (perhaps a brother of St. Joseph? ) And later a leading figure of the Jerusalem church.

In the Gospel of John, Mary Cleophas is among the women at the cross mentioned Jn 19:25 HER: " Now there stood by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother 's sister, Mary (the wife ) of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. " Because of the sentence structure is they regarded by some as a sister of the mother of Jesus, while others consider it rather unlikely that two sisters have the same name. However, it could also have been a sister in law, as " sister " in the biblical context does not necessarily refer to a biological sisters.

In the parallel passage in Matthew ( Mt 27,56 EU) is among the women on the cross a "Mary mother of James and Joses " mentioned in Luke among the women at the grave of a "Mary mother of James " (Luke 24,10 EU) which are usually both equated with Mary of Cleophas. The son named James bibelkundlich is also known as James the Little, about whom nothing is further known (if not with James the Less, son of Alphaeus, identified him ). Similarly, the " other Mary " is identified in (Mt 27,81 EU) with the Mary of Cleophas. However, it is also conceivable that Cleopas and his wife were the parents of the two " Mr. Brothers" Simon and Jude; then you could look at the " other Mary " ( married and with Alphaeus ) is the parent of the other two " Mr brothers " James and Joses. In this construction, the Lord's brother James would equated with the "younger" James ( " son of Alphaeus " ), which serves primarily to maintain the assumption of a never lost virginity of the Mother of Jesus ( other evidence of this identification of the different bearers of the name James does not exist ).

In the medieval Legenda aurea Cleophas, however, immediately identified with Alphaeus the father of James the Younger ( Mt 10,28 EU), so his wife Mary as the mother of James the Less, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Thaddaeus is considered. This identification is also now represented by individual, most Catholic interpreters that accept a DC or Wechselnamigkeit one and the same person because of the similarity of the names, as has happened frequently in the Gräzisierung Jewish name ( it is assumed a person with the Semitic name Chalpai ).

According to tradition, Mary Cleophas had fled together with ( Maria) Salome of Galilee and Sara -la -Kali before a persecution of Christians on a ship from Israel and landed at the place in southern France, which now after them Saintes- Maries- de -la -Mer called.
