Mary of Guelders

Maria von Geldern ( * um 1434 in Grave, † December 1, 1463 in Roxburgh ) was Queen of Scotland.

Life

She was born as the daughter of Arnold, Duke of money, and his wife Catherine of Cleves.

On July 3, 1449 was married in Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh with the Scottish King James II.

The couple had seven children:

  • John

Her husband died in 1460 at the age of only 30 years due to an accident, this time her eldest son was only nine years old. Up to the age she acted as its regent.

Mary was a devout Catholic and founded in memory of her husband, the Trinity College Church on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, of which however the apse is still preserved.

Mary died in 1463 at Roxburgh Castle, and was buried in the Trinity College Church founded by her, and later her body was in the Holyrood Abbey, the grave place of the Scottish kings, reburied.
