Mary, Queen of Hungary

Maria (Hungarian Mária, Croatian Marija, * 1370 or 1371, † May 17 1395 ) was Queen of Hungary from the dynasty of Anjou. She was the daughter and successor of King Ludwig I.

A main objective of the policy of Louis I, who had no male heir, was to secure the female succession to the throne in his kingdom, which consisted of Hungary and Poland. To this end, among other things, the destruction of Poland shall be intended, but failed because of the resistance of the Polish nobility.

After the death of Louis in 1382 were Mary and her husband Sigismund of Luxembourg, first back up the Hungarian royal crown and sought the domination of Poland and thus a continuation of the Personal Union. However, the Polish nobility refused and asked several meetings that the future Queen had to live permanently in Poland. This was for the Polish throne left only Mary's sister Hedwig, who took their inheritance after several confrontations 1384.
