Mary Stewart (novelist)

Mary Stewart ( born September 12, 1916 in Sunderland, northern England, as Mary Florence Elinor Rainbow ) is a British writer.

Life

She started at the age of five years to write, when she published her first poem in a small local community newsletter. After she had her Master of Arts Degree at the University of Durham, she taught English there until 1945 when she married Sir Frederick Stewart, a member of the Royal Society.

Ten years later, her first novel "Madam, will you talk? " And since then she has written more than 20 novels for adults as well as radio plays and children's books. Some of their stories were filmed for cinema and television.

She won in 1961 for " My Brother Michael" the Crime Writers Association Silver Dagger. The book takes place in ancient Delphi and was their first playing in Greece novel, written after frequent stay in this country. About the Book said Mary Stewart: " ' My Brother Michael ' what my love affair with Greece. " Her novels have been to worldwide bestsellers and are an interesting mix of romance, mystery and excitement and she uses her knowledge of history and literature - with great skill and success.

Three of her most famous books " The Crystal Cave " (1970 " Flaming Crystal", Munich 1989), " The Hollow Hills " (1973, " The Heritage", Munich 1989) and "The Last Enchantment " (1979, " Merlin's Farewell ", Munich 1989) deal with the legendary world of King Arthur and Merlin the Magician, a world with which even " the Prince and the Pilgrim " is concerned. Their stories are often in France, Great Britain, Greece ( " The Moon Spinners " ) and also Austria and are always carefully researched and described.

In 1971 she was awarded by the International P.E.N. Association Frederick Niven prize for the " The Crystal Cave " and in 1974 she was awarded the Scottish Arts Council Award for the children's novel " Ludo and the Star Horse " award. In 1996 her life's work was honored with the Agatha Award.

Born in England many years lived in Scotland, where she shuttled between Edinburgh and the West Highlands. Her hobbies include, inter alia, natural history, gardening, Greek and Roman history, music and art in general.
