Marzanna

Morena (also Morana, Marena, Marzana, Marzanna or Śmiertka ) is a form of Slavic mythology, which is associated with winter, night and death.

In some places in Central Eastern Europe is an annual dressed in an old garment straw doll that Morena, carried about in procession and then burned or thrown into the water. This is the winter are expelled. As a counterweight to Morena applies a decorated with colorful and lively material rod or even a sapling.

The Polish chronicler January Dlugosz described the custom at the end of the 15th century and identified Morena with Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture. However, there is no evidence that a goddess of that name would have been worshiped in pre-Christian times.
