Masaryk University

The Masaryk University ( Masarykova univerzita ) in Brno is the second largest university in the Czech Republic. The university, founded in 1919 currently consists of nine faculties with about 30,000 students. It is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the founder and first president of Czechoslovakia.

Genesis

The University was founded in 1919 with four faculties ( Law, Medicine, Natural Sciences and Humanities ). In 1939, the university was closed by the German occupying power. After the war, the restoration of the Faculty of Law through the communist coup in 1948 was slowed and eventually ended with the abolition of the Faculty in 1950. 1953, the Faculty of Education (est. 1946) was spun and the University remained only three faculties. In 1960, the Faculty of Pharmacy was closed by government decision and the university was renamed after the Czech biologist Jan Evangelista Purkyně.

The 1960s were a happier time: In 1964, the Faculty of Education was re- incorporated in 1969 and restored the Faculty of Law. Since 1990, the university takes its original name. In the same year, the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences was founded in 1994 from the Faculty of computer science, 1998, the Faculty of Social Sciences and in 2001 the Faculty of Sport Sciences.
