Muaskar, Arabic معسكر, DMG Mu ʿ askar, formerly known as Mascara, is a city in Algeria in the eponymous province in the Hobra River located. The city has 108 587 inhabitants ( Census 2008).

History

20 km east of Muaskar the oldest so far discovered in North Africa, fossils of the genus Homo have been recovered. They come from a sand pit near Tighénif (formerly Fine Terni ), where they were exposed 1954-1956. There are three lower jaw (archive number Tighénif 1 to 3) as well as several individual teeth that are attributed to Homo erectus and early Atlanthropus mauritanicus had been called.

In the 19th century Muaskar capital of Algeria under Abd el-Kader. From 1848 until independence in 1962 Algeria Mascara was the capital of the eponymous arrondissement in the department of Oran. August 18, 1994 Muaskar was rocked by an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale. It killed 171 people.
