Mask of Sorrow

The mask of grief (Russian Маска скорби ) is a 15 meter high monument dedicated to the victims of Stalin's purges in the Soviet Union, who were detained in the camps in Kolyma.

The sculpture was erected on 12 June 1996 on a mountain slope in Magadan. In the same year the creator of the Statue Ernst Neizvestny whose parents fell victim to the Stalinist purges of the 1930s to the victim, was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation.

The stone statue depicts a mask, tears flowing from their left eye in the form of smaller masks. The right eye is designed as a barred window. On the back of weeping women and a crucified man can be seen without a head. The monument is a replica of a typical prison cell from the Stalin era.
