Masoko

Masoko in the district Rungwe is a place in southwestern Tanzania, which has about 8,000 residents. Masoko located 14 kilometers southeast of Tukuyu on the way to Lake Nyasa and is located immediately adjacent to the same circular crater lake. The place name means 'market'.

The place has the center to still building parts of the former German Boma. Masoko ( old spelling: Massoko ) was in the German colonial era location of the 5th Company of the Army for German East Africa.

When the Germans in 1917 granted the town, larger amounts of material were sunk in the lake. Children have for years Heller coins salvaged from the lake and sold to tourists.
