Mason County (Kentucky)
Mason County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Maysville, which was named after John May, who donated the land to the city's founding.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern Kentucky, is bordered to the north by the state of Ohio, separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 639 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Lewis County Fleming County Robertson County Bracken County and.
History
Mason County was formed on November 5, 1788 from portions of Bourbon County. It was named after George Mason, a political leader.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Mason County 16,800 people in 6,847 households and 4,697 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.88 percent White, 7.16 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.57 percent from other races groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.95 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,847 households out of which 31.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, 31.4 percent were non-families, 27.6 percent of all households and 12.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.92.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.1 percent population under 18 years, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 89.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 30,195, and the median income for a family was $ 37,257. Males have a median income of $ 30,718, women $ 21,216. The per capita income was $ 16,589. 12.9 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 23.6 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 13.7 percent of those 65 years.
