Mason County (Michigan)

Mason County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ludington.

Geography

The County is located in the west of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, adjacent to Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​3216 square kilometers, of which 1934 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Manistee County, Lake County and Oceana County.

History

Mason County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Notipekago County. It was named after Stevens T. Mason, a governor of Michigan.
