Mason County (West Virginia)
Mason County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Point Pleasant.
Geography
The County is located in western West Virginia, adjacent to Ohio, where the limit by the Ohio River is formed, and has an area of 1152 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gallia County ( Ohio), Meigs County ( Ohio), Jackson County, Putnam County and Cabell County.
History
Mason County was formed on January 2, 1804 from parts of Kanawha County. It was named after George Mason, a relevant author of the constitution of his home state of Virginia, in particular, the Virginia Declaration of Rights and a member of the Constituent Assembly ( " Constitunional Convention " ) of the United States.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Mason County 25,957 people in 10,587 households and 7,569 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.37 percent White, 0.50 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.11 percent from other races groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,587 households out of which 30.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, 28.5 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent of all households and 11.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.89.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.7 percent population under 18 years, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 27,134, and the median income for a family was $ 32,953. Males have a median income of $ 32,382, women $ 17,074. The per capita income was $ 14,804. 16.6 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 14.5 percent of those 65 years.
