Mason County (West Virginia)

Mason County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Point Pleasant.

Geography

The County is located in western West Virginia, adjacent to Ohio, where the limit by the Ohio River is formed, and has an area of 1152 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gallia County ( Ohio), Meigs County ( Ohio), Jackson County, Putnam County and Cabell County.

History

Mason County was formed on January 2, 1804 from parts of Kanawha County. It was named after George Mason, a relevant author of the constitution of his home state of Virginia, in particular, the Virginia Declaration of Rights and a member of the Constituent Assembly ( " Constitunional Convention " ) of the United States.
