Masonry trowel

The trowel is a tool that fits the bricklayer bricks in a wall, or attaching too plaster on a masonry wall is finished. A regional designation ( the Rhineland ) truffle.

You may be triangular and quadrangular.

There are also special trowels as:

  • Berlin trowel
  • Pointed trowel
  • Plaster trowel ( regional: Schwebchen )
  • Pointing trowel
  • Trowel (or trowel )
  • Tongue trowel, filbert, a trowel with a rounded tip
  • U.v.m.

When the handle is triangular trowel by a curved connection ( S-shape, also called swan-neck ) to the trowel blade. The side length of the trowel should be used with the brick length (normal format block: l = 24 cm, b = 11.5 cm, h = 7.1 cm) be almost identical, so that the recorded mortar can fill the stone bed full.

When choosing a trowel in a triangular shape must be taken on a low center of gravity. This is determined by placing the disc is placed just below the handle ( for example on the index finger). The trowel blade should level off in the horizontal. This is important because the weight must be balanced with the wrist when shooting the mortar and just when brushing. It is also important that the extension of the trowel handle shows as closely as possible to the trowel tip. Since this is often not the case, the mason his trowel depends often with a hammer to himself.

The triangular trowel is also used for cleaning large areas. In this case, after taking the plaster trowel is carried away from the surface to gain momentum. Then the ladle is rotated out of the wrist so that the sheet is in the vertical. The rotational movement of the mass is pressed onto the trowel blade. The upper leaf surface with the mortar is now pointing to the wall surface. The ladle is now guided to the location at which the mortar is to be adhered. By laterally pulling the trowel ( Backhand: the body away, forehand: towards the body), the mortar is released from the trowel blade. It is the leaf page from which dissolves the mortar, as guided along parallel to the wall, that the mass distributed in the desired direction.

Before the invention Shine special plaster trowels could assume dimensions disproportionate to fire up the largest possible area quickly.

The rectangle shape is also suitable for chimney construction with narrow chimneys, the supernatant drawn off in a chimney mortar and the joints can be closed. For plastering the rectangle shape is not very suitable. The leaf link is here as a simple, run a little backwards inclined web.

Triangle Kellen also be used during archaeological excavations for the careful and slow removal of soil and cultural layers. Because of this sometimes seen large leverage forces archaeologists trowel trowels are for preferred their metal parts are made of one piece.
