The Massachusetts General Hospital ( MGH ), headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of the Medical School of Harvard University. History

The Massachusetts General Hospital was founded in 1811 and is the third-oldest general hospital in the United States, and the oldest and largest in New England. The original building was erected in 1818. Its architect Charles Bulfinch was still called during construction to Washington, where he took over the office of the Architect of the Capitol. Surgery under general anesthesia using diethyl ether was held on October 16, 1846 in the so-called ether - cathedral for the first time in medical history took place.

The MGH is also running a research budget of around 500 million U.S. dollars, the most extensive research program of all hospitals in the United States.
