Massie L. Kennard

Massie Kennard ( born October 23, 1918 ( date uncertain) in Chicago, Illinois, † 10 October 1986 in Chicago), Massie L. Kennard complete Jr., was an African-American Lutheran pastor, who later became managing director for the program staff of the Committee on the American missionary work of the Lutheran Church in America.

Importance

Kennard was a main character of the struggle for ethnic and racial equality and integration in the former Lutheran Church in America. His goal was to Americans of non-European descent, Asians, Native and African American to win for the ministry to make his church a multi-ethnic community. Alone with this work, he used the lay employees of the church program. Of 175 persons with whom he worked, he could 12 lead in the ministry, including women.

Life

During World War II Kennard served for four years in the U.S. Air Force. For six years he sold real estate and insurance in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kennard graduated from the Roosevelt University the academic degree of Bachelor of Psychology and at the Theological Seminary Garrett a bachelor of theology. He then studied at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Chicago.

Ordained in 1958, he served the church in various official positions.

1959-1965 he was pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Buffalo.

In 1965 he became associate pastor of Augustana Lutheran Church in Washington.

In 1968 he was commissioned by the Lutheran Church in America, the Office of the Director of Minority Affairs of the Department for Mission tasks in North America.

In 1970 he received an honorary doctorate from the Lutheran College Midland in Fremont (Nebraska ).

He became director of the Lutheran Church in America for Special Affairs in 1972.

In 1977 he accepted the position of Director of the Lutheran Church in America for racial and ethnic affairs. In this position he remained until his death in 1986.

The he developed plan for the integration of minorities was adopted by his church in 1978.

Remembrance

The Sacred Calendar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America remembers him as one of the innovators of the church on October 10.
