Massimo Stanzione

Massimo Stanzione ( even called Stanzioni; * about 1586; † around 1656) was an Italian Baroque painter who spent much of his life in Naples. Born about 1586 in Naples Massioma Stanzione was significantly influenced by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. However, his nickname was the Neapolitan Guido Reni to be an elegant style meet. Massimo Stanzione combined Caravaggions dramatically lit and often brutally realistic scenes with classical and lyrical paintings of the Bolognese painter.

Life

It is not known, is formed by whom Massimo Stanzione. It is generally assumed that he was trained at Fabrizio Santafede. The influence of Caravaggio's painting, however, is unmistakable. Therefore, art historians believe that Stanzione was staying at an early period of his picturesque career in Rome. It is possible that he began his career as a portraitist. One of his best known paintings is a portrait of woman in a folk costume and portraits of Jerome Banks. It is assumed that he repeatedly traveled back and forth 1617-1630 between Rome and his home town of Naples and in the cities studied very different art styles.

Massimo Stanzione acquired very early the reputation of being one of the most influential Neapolitan painter. This is due to his large altarpieces and frescoes, which attracted many students and imitators. His rival was Jusepe de Ribera, with whom he jointly influenced the art scene in Naples.

From affect Massimo Stanzione 's artistic development was his acquaintance with Artemisia Gentileschi. There is evidence that Massimo Stanzione and the artist Artemisia Gentileschi moved about in the same year to Naples. Stanzione was looking Gentileschi on a daily basis, to observe them while painting. Of particular importance to him was their way to give their paintings color.
