Mastermind (TV series)

Mastermind is the longest established British TV quiz show and is currently running on Friday nights on BBC Two. It has nothing to do with the logical slot game of the same name. The show will be broadcast since 1972 with minor interruptions from several transmitters, only the quiz radio show Brain of Britain is even longer in the program. The current moderator is the Welshman John Humphrys ( born 1943 ).

The half-hour program consists of a combination of a two-minute round of questions on a specific topic, which is chosen by the candidates themselves, and a two and a half minute general knowledge round - four candidates per shipment thus play only four and a half minutes each per person. The randomly selected first candidate sits down on a chair across from the host introduces himself by name and profession and calls his special subject, then it behind the other questions are asked until the time is up. Does he not know a question, he can either say "pass " to which directly comes the next question, or advise, which has the disadvantage that an incorrect answer yet time consuming the correct answer is read. Correct answers result in a point, do not lead to false trigger, but cost only time. After all candidates have played their first round, begins the last place in the general education round; the points from both rounds are simply added together, who in the end has the most, wins. The candidates never play as in otherwise similar The big prize directly against each other, there is no risk issues or Joker.

The best candidates qualify for a semi-final or final years, for new shipments is customarily well as other specialties. Known winner of this years finals are, inter alia, 1983 Chris Hughes ( topic of British steam locomotives until 1963 ), 1995 of multiple Quiz World and European Champion Kevin Ashman, who set up his theme Martin Luther King the today valid record ( total points) of 41 has, and in 2005 the Irishman Pat Gibson (the first theme Quentin Tarantino ), Quiz 2007 World Champion and millions winner in who Wants to Be a Millionaire? , all three professionals at the show Eggheads today. Recall that all three could win the annual Finals at Brain of Britain, you can see a correlation.

Over the years, a variety of spin-offs have been developed and partially pulped, v. a for celebrities, but also for children or in Welsh.
