Masters of Reality

Masters of Reality is an American rock band. They are considered one of the most important pioneers and instigators of Stoner Rock.

History

The Masters of Reality were founded in 1981 in Syracuse (New York), the only members were initially high school friends Chris Goss and Tim Harrington. Before the name of Masters of Reality zulegten to which they borrowed from the third album by Black Sabbath, they called themselves the first appearances long " Manson Family ". By 1985, two keyboardists were engaged, Mr. Owl and Googe. In the following years she appeared in clubs in the vicinity. To stay afloat, the members had but initially hire in various part-time jobs.

1988 got a demo tape of the Master into the hands of Rick Rubin. He produced the group so that they Rubins on newly formed label Def American self-titled debut ( which is also known under the name The Blue Garden because of the almost legendary folding Covers ) could publish. Since Rick Rubin did not like keyboards, left main keyboardist Mr. Owl the band Googe saddled on bass to, and Vincent " Vinnie " Ludovico was hired as drummer. Mr. Owl was still playing while the intro to, for example, Kill the King on the debut and is still noted among the credits of the plate. Soon after, Chris Goss and Googe separated from the other two members. They also switched to the hip- hop label Delicous Vinyl, on the 1990 debut album, this time with a different track order and the song Doraldina 's Prophecies extended, was re-released. Harrington and Ludovico founded the rock group bogeymen.

During this time, Chris Goss learned the drumming legend Ginger Baker, former drummer of Cream, know and led him to drum for the Masters. However, it took three years to the album Sunrise on the Sufferbus appeared, this time on Baker's label Chrysalis. Chris Goss began at this time also to produce several bands, including three albums by Kyuss. To the Masters themselves, however, it was increasingly quiet. In 1994, this album The Ballad of Jody Frosty has never been published, but many songs found their way onto later released the band's albums.

1997 emerged the Masters out of the woodwork and played a few concerts in the Viper Room in Los Angeles, where, among others, Scott Weiland, lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, appeared as a guest musician. The live recordings of these performances were on the legendary album How High the Moon released ( which was reissued in 2001 under the name Reality Show).

Only five years after Sunrise on the Sufferbus then appeared in 1999 's third studio album by the band, Welcome to the Western Lodge, this time to Chris Goss ' own label Brown House. The lineup of the band had by now changed so often that of the original cast Chris Goss was only himself remained. From a group with fixed members who had after all played over eight years in the same constellation, the project of a single man had developed working with ever-changing guest musicians ( under which, for example, the Queens of the Stone Age members Josh Homme, Nick Olivieri and Mark Lanegan or Nine - inch -Nails - bassist Twiggy Ramirez are located). In addition, Goss continued his work as a producer intense, among other things, Soulwax, Queens of the Stone Age or Kyuss successor Slo Burn.

In 2001, the album was released Deep in the Hole, the live recording of the subsequent European tour followed in 2002 under the title Flak 'n' Flight.

2004, first published under the name of Chris Goss / Masters of Reality album Give Us Barabbas is a collection of many unreleased songs, some of which were at the time of publication more than 20 years old.

The Masters of Reality have retreated to the studio in January 2008 ( Rancho de la Luna ) to record the official successor to Pine / Cross Dover by Deep in the Hole ( 2001).
