Matabeleland

The Matabeleland is a region in the south of Zimbabwe and settled since the 1830s by the Matabele, which have been formed by splitting off from the living to the east of South Africa Zulu. From 1837 to 1893 it was the core area of the sovereign Matabele kingdom which included the still inhabited mostly by Shona territories of present-day Zimbabwe after 1860. The country was conquered by the turn of the century by the colonial troops of the British ( Matabeleaufstand ). The main town is Bulawayo. In addition to the cultivation of cereals, sugar and cotton and gold is mined.

Today, the area is divided into administrative regions Zimbabwe Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South.

Before immigration Matabele there were successively two successor states of the (first ) Mutapa Empire. Their centers are known ruin sites today. Khami was the center of Torwa State, Dhlodhlo ( Danangombe ) Center of Changamire State.
