Matador is a city in Motley County in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat ( county seat ).

History

The city was founded in 1891 and named for the Matador Ranch located there. The first post office was opened in 1886. The largest population was registered in 1940 with 1,376 inhabitants. Today live according to the census of 2000, about 740 inhabitants there.

Economy

The city is a transit point for cattle, horses and agricultural products. There are two hospitals, a school, a weekly newspaper and the recreational facilities at Lake Jameson Lake and Virginia Walton Park.

Demographic data

Data obtained from the census in 2000 740 inhabitants of Matador lived in 308 households; among them were 222 families. The population density was 220 per km ². In the resort 395 residential units were recorded. Among the population was 84 % White, 6% African American, 1% American Indian and 7 % of other ethnic groups; 2 % reported belonging to several ethnic groups.

Among the 308 households 31% had children under the age of 18; 26% were single-person households. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size 2.88.

The population was spread out with 26% under 18 years old, 7% 18-24 years 21% 25-44 years 25 % 45-64 years and 21 % 65 years or older. The median age was 43 years.

The median household income was $ 27,778, the median family income $ 32,054. The per capita income was $ 17,001 in Matador. Under the poverty line lived 19.7 % of the population.
