Matai (Maucatar)

Matai is an East Timorese place Aldeia and Suco in the subdistrict Maucatar (District of Cova Lima).

The eponymous mountain, the Foho Matai is located five kilometers from the village Matai away in Suco Ogues (9 ° 17 ' S, 125 ° 15' O 9.2791666666667125.25 ).

The place

Matai is located about 87 km south of the state capital Dili at an altitude of 61 meters above the sea. The village has a primary school, the Escola Primaria Matai.

The Suco

In Suco Matai live 2,740 inhabitants (2010, 2004: 2,686 ). About 50 % of the population give Tetum Terik as their native language. About 45 % speak Bunak that is otherwise in the other Sucos the subdistrict clear majority language. Minorities speak Tetum Prasa and Mambai.

The Suco located in the southeast Maucatars and is only connected to the west across the Suco Ogues with the remaining sub-district. Matai has an area of ​​11.18 km ². History

On 9 September 1999, four people were murdered by the Indonesian military and pro- Indonesian militias during the riots after the independence referendum in East Timor in Matai.

When fighting between two gangs of youths from the villages Cunain and Matai on 4 January 2008, eight houses were set on fire in Cunain. The National Police arrested 14 suspects PNTL, two were later released. One of the suspects was the then Chefe de Suco Lauren Tino de Jesus, who denied the allegations. 15 affected families have received support from the Ministry of Social Affairs and the World Food Programme.

Policy

In the elections of 2004/2005 Lauren Tino de Jesusu was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections, Vicente Safera won.
