Matale

Province

Matale is a town in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, it is located at about 470 m above sea level and has about 37,000 inhabitants.

The city is the center of a major plantation area, are grown in the rubber, cinnamon, pepper, chillies, tea, rice and vegetables. Due to the prosperity of this is many crops grown by the wet - tropical climate and by the location in an interrupted only in the north cirque.

Attractions

The city is dominated by the British fort Macdowall, which was created in the 19th century during the British conquest war against the Kingdom of Kandy. It is located above the central Saxton Park, near which is also the commercial and administrative center of the city are Matale.

In the center lies the Hindu temple Sri Muthumariamman Thevasthaman whose colorful, rich sculptural decoration is very interesting.

Also located in the district of Matale and the Temple of Aluvihara, who is considered one of the most important centers of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
