Matara District

Matara is a district in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka. It has an area of 1,283 km ². Capital is Matara.

The population in 2001 was 761'370 people according to the census.

History

Despite its location on the southern coast hit in 2004 by an earthquake -triggered tsunami, the coast with full force. At that time, 1'221 people died according to official figures in the Matara district. Almost 20,000 families were affected by the consequences of the tsunami.

Management

The head of the district is entitled District Secretary. The district is further divided into sixteen divisions ( under a Division Secretary ).
