Mates of State
Mates of State are an American indie rock duo since 1997. The group is composed of Kori Gardner (vocals, keyboards, synthesizers ) and Jason Hammel ( vocals, drums, glockenspiel, percussion, synthesizers ).
Band History
The first contact of the group took place in Lawrence, Kansas were involved instead while both in other music projects. In 1997, the group was founded in Lawrence, Kansas while Gardner and Hammel played together in the band vosotros. A short time later mutton began to study medicine which, however, he already gave up in 2001 to promote cooperation with Gardner the music project. In the same year, both married. Together they have two daughters, Magnolia and June Elizabeth.
Gardner and Hammel lived in San Francisco until 2004, after East Haven, Connecticut attracted. In February 2007, they sold their house in East Haven and are currently living in New York City.
Characterised is the music of the band by the harmony of male and female voice. Both members sing with great intensity, often in the higher regions of their voices. They often sing while simultaneously different but complementary melodies and lyrics. The pace is almost always fast, similar to that. Club or in Electronic Dance Music
The band released an album under the label Omnibus Records before they switched to their second and third album on Polyvinyl. Furthermore, the group released five 7- inch singles and two EPs. In December 2005, the Group changed the label again to Barsuk Records in which on 21 March 2006 the album Bring It Back appeared.
" Goods ( All In Your Head ) " from the All Day EP was released in 2007 in the film In the Land of Women.
The song "For the Actor " from the album Bring It Back is used in an advertisement for AT & T Mobility for wireless mobile phones. The commercial shows the group during a performance. "For the Actor" has also been used in a commercial for Carnival Cruise Lines.
The fifth album, Re - Arrange Us, was released on 20 May 2008.
On 13 September 2011 the so far last album Mountaintops appeared.
Tour and appearances
Mates of State have been seen in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia.
Furthermore, they were the opening act for The Anniversary during the release tour for Your Majesty.
2003 Mates of State toured with Palomar together and in 2006 together with Spoon and Death Cab for Cutie. They also supported We Are Scientists during their tour in the UK in November 2006.
In February and March 2007, the group appeared among others in New York, Boston, Seattle, Chicago and Minneapolis as part of a tour of the radio show This American Life. Some of the performances were included in the publication appeared in 2008, " What I Learned from Television".
