Mathematical Sciences Research Institute

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute ( MSRI ) is a mathematical research institute at the University of California, Berkeley (near the Grizzly Peak in the hills above Berkeley ), which was founded in 1982 by Shiing - Shen Chern, Calvin Moore and Isadore Singer, among others and is funded by the National Science Foundation. There are regular workshops, four of them throughout the semester to focus topics ( two each at the same time ). Every year 20 to 30 post-doctoral scientists are recorded. There is no permanent faculty members, other than administrative staff.

The private sector sponsors of former mathematics professor heard ( one of the discoverers of the Chern - Simons theory ) and hedge fund founder James Simons. The MSRI is also striving to public relations. In Simons Auditorium regular classical music concerts. In Berkeley are also known public discussions of Robert Osserman with artists who have a connection to mathematics as the comedian Steve Martin, the playwright Tom Stoppard, the composer Philip Glass. The MSRI is also working with playwrights in Berkeley.
