Mathematician

Mathematicians are concerned with the preservation and development of the discipline of mathematics and the application of knowledge to practical purposes. The application of mathematical methods leads to accurate knowledge and statements, in particular sub-areas also quantitative results (eg from numerical analysis, and statistics ).

The increasing mathematization of everyday life means that mathematicians are used in many areas, particularly in research, in economics, in insurance companies, in the public sector (schools and universities, statistics), in marketing, in meteorology, logistics, in image processing, security technology, and of course in Information Technology.

You can be active in specialty areas, such as Numerical Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematical logic, algebra, geometry, calculus, model theory, and probability theory. Since many methods and techniques can be applied to other sub-areas, a clear classification is not always possible.

Training

The academic degree degree in mathematics is acquired through study at a university, colleges award the degrees Mathematician ( FH). The standard period of study at the University is at most universities nine semester at colleges eight semesters. After switching to the European study system, the study duration is up to the Bachelor six semesters that the acts building upon master another four semesters. To what extent these targets correspond with the actual duration of study, remains to be seen when the first graduates complete their studies under the new system.

Curriculum

Course content in the basic studies usually include: analysis, linear algebra, numerical analysis, stochastics, an elective course and a minor.

In the main study areas of pure ( theoretical ) and applied mathematics are enhanced, for example, in the direction of differential geometry, topology, functional analysis or optimization. Additionally there is a minor, the treated sometimes the application of mathematics in other subjects, such as economics, computer science or physics.
