Matheran Hill Railway

The Matheran Hill Railway ( also Matheran Light Railway ) is a narrow gauge railway with a track width 610 mm (2 feet) in the Indian state of Maharashtra, the neral, between Mumbai ( Bombay ) and Pune ( Poona ) located, leads to the climatic health resort of Matheran. It is now Division Central Railway (CR ) operated by the Indian State Railways. The first train ran in March, 1907.

Description

The railway line to the " Table Mountain " was built as a private railway from the Indian millionaire Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy between 1904 and 1907 and later sold to the state. It overcomes at about 20 kilometers an altitude difference of 719 m, no other Indian train does not rack on such a short distance. Traffic

Rolling stock

The steam locomotives in service until 1982 came from German production of Orenstein & Koppel. Currently there are five diesel locomotives are used, one of which (No. 600) in India and four in young were built in Germany. A steam locomotive (No. 4, Orenstein & Koppel, built in 1905 ) is located in the work-up for the tourist traffic.

Trivia

  • Like other Indian narrow gauge railways is also called 'Toy Train' the Matheran Hill Railway.
  • The 40 -meter-long tunnel only carries the jocular name ' One Kiss Tunnel '.
  • The train is on the list of candidates as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO
