Mathews County, Virginia

Mathews County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 9207 inhabitants and a population density of 41 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mathews.

Geography

Mathews County is located in the easternmost part of Virginia, bordering the Chesapeake Bay and has an area of 653 square kilometers, of which 431 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gloucester County and Middlesex County.

History

Made it in 1791 from parts of Gloucester County. It was named after Brigadier General Thomas Mathews and spokesman of the delegates in the National Assembly of Virginia. 1776 left the last royal governor, Lord Dunmore, after he was chased by General Andrew Lewis and the Continental Army until after Gwynn's Iceland.
