Mathias Berthold

Mathias Berthold ( born May 18, 1965 in Gargellen ) is a former Austrian alpine skier and current coach. He won the 1985 slalom rating in the European Cup and reached the podium in the World Cup. He was professional world champion in slalom in 1993. Since 1996, Berthold has worked as a trainer from 2010 to 2014 as head coach of the Austrian men's teams since 2014 as head coach of the German men's teams.

Career

Berthold visited the Skihauptschule in Schruns and the Skihandelsschule in Stams. In 1979 he was Austrian student champion in giant slalom, and in combination and 1983 Austrian Junior Champion in slalom. In the European Cup of Vorarlberg started from the 1983/84 season and this winter could also equal to his first race, the slalom in Pamporovo win. In the next season he celebrated two more victories in the slalom at Corno alle Scale and in Savognin and was runner-up in each of the two slalom in Garmisch -Partenkirchen. His first start in the World Cup had Berthold in slalom in Kranjska Gora, where he came eleventh on 16 February 1985 at the start. In the winter of 1985/86 he was seven times into the top fifteen. Best result was the ninth place in the slalom in Parpan. In the 1986/87 season he was able to further increase, finished in December in Kranjska Gora, ranked sixth, reaching on 25 January in the Slalom of Kitzbühel, only eight hundredths of a second behind the winner Bojan Križaj, second place and therefore his best World Cup result. Two weeks later, Berthold came at the World Championships in Crans -Montana, but only on the 16th slalom ranking. In the season 1987/88 Berthold could not repeat his last year's results. Best result was eighth in the slalom in Kranjska Gora, other times he drove in the top fifteen. At the beginning of the 1989/90 season he came into the North American race again three times in the top ten for the first time in the giant slalom. He celebrated five victories, drove about 30 times on the podium and won twice the third place in the overall standings. In 1993 he became professional world champion in slalom and won in 1991 and 1993 in combination and in 1996 in the slalom bronze medal at the Senior World Championships.

After his playing career Berthold became a coach. Initially, he worked for two years in the UK before he was in the autumn of 1998 for four years slalom and giant slalom coach of the Austrian women's team. In winter 2002/ 03 Berthold was Trainers of the U.S. Women's and from 2003 he coached the technicians in the German Ski Association. In 2006, he became head coach of the German ski ladies with whom he won three gold medals at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
