Mathias Brugman

Mathias Brugman ( Mathias Bruckman, born January 3, 1811 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, † September 30, 1868 in Yauco, Puerto Rico) was one of the leaders in the rebellion Grito de Lares for the independence of Puerto Rico.

Life

As the son of originating from a Dutch family, Pierre Brugman from Curaçao and Puerto Rican mother Isabel Duliebre he was born in New Orleans, where he also completed his training.

Later Brugman moved with his family to Mayaguez in Puerto Rico, where he married Ana Maria Lalorde. With a colmado ( grocery store ), he had relatively great success, but he lost a substantial portion of its assets in an attempt to grow coffee.

Like many other residents of the island rebelled against his political injustice that emanated from the Spaniards. That's why he fought for the independence movement and admired Ramón Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis.

In his calmado the people to discuss politics met. Brugman met Manuel Rojas and know his brother Miguel and joined the conspiratorial revolt against the Spaniards. Along with other patriots, they founded a number of cells of a revolutionary committees in the cities of the West Coast. On September 23, 1868, the revolution began with the capture of the Grito de Lares Lares. The revolutionaries declared the island to free " Republic of Puerto Rico ", but forewarned Spaniards defeated the small army of liberators quickly.

Mathias Brugman fled along with Baldomero Baurer into hiding, while other rebels killed or - as Manuel Rojas and Mariana Bracetti - were arrested. On September 30, 1868 farmworkers Francisco Qiñones, who worked on the Asuncion Plantation, Brugman and Baurer and led the Spaniards to their hiding place betrayed. The two rebels resisted and were executed.
