Mathon (Romansh Maton ) is a municipality in the district of Shams in the district of Rhein Behind the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Geography
It lies at the Schamserberg on a terrace on the eastern slopes of the Piz Bever west of Donat. Of the total municipal area of 15 km ² 1,002 ha are used for agriculture, for the most part as mountain pastures ( mountain farms ). More 337 ha are unproductive area ( almost exclusively Mountains); 152 hectares are covered by forest and woodland, and the rest of 21 ha settlement area.

Languages
Original language of the inhabitants is Sutselvisch, a Grison Romanesque dialect. Until the second half of the 19th century the church was monolingual (1880 95 % Romansh ). By 1970, the language situation remained stable (1941 88%, 1970 90 % novels ). Since then, there will be a massive shift in favor of the Germans by immigration and language change. From 1990 to 2000, doubled the number of German-speaking, while the number of Romansh speakers dropped by a third. Although 82 % of the population understand Romanesque, German is the only language authorities today.
Origin and nationality
From the end of 2005, 57 residents were all Swiss nationals.
