Mathurin-Jacques Brisson

Mathurin Jacques Brisson - ( born April 30, 1723 in Fontenay -le- Comte, † June 23, 1806 in Croissy -sur -Seine near Paris) was a French zoologist and natural philosopher.

Life and work

Brisson dealt early on with natural history and brought out some works, such as Regnum animale (1756-1762) and Ornithologia (1760 ). After the death of René- Antoine de Reaumur Ferchault, whose assistant he was, he has abandoned the natural history and became in 1757 Professor of Experimental Physics at the Collège Royal de Navarre. His most important work in this field was Pesanteur spécifique des corps (1787 ), and he published other works on physical subjects, who were then very important. Brisson was as Maître de Physique & d' Histoire Naturelle of Enfans de France Member of the Académie royale des Sciences.

Beginning of 1806 he suffered a severe stroke, as a result, he almost lost his French language skills.

Ornithology

Brisson wrote in 1760 a six -volume work, the Ornithologia. His ornithology is, in addition to the nine -volume work of Georges- Louis Leclerc de Buffon (Volumes 16-24 ) over the birds Histoire naturelle des oiseaux ( 1770 to 1785 ), the beginning of a scientific ornithology. The Ornithologia provides a cataloging among other things, the extensive collection of René- Antoine de Reaumur Ferchault dar. Brisson's main intention was to classify the birds, for this he used a natural system and rejected the binary system of Linnaeus. At 261 copper plates about 500 bird illustrations in natural surroundings by François- Nicolas Martinet (about 1760-1800 ) are shown. The illustrator has also been the artistic director of Buffon issue later.
