Matica slovenská

Matica Slovenská (such as " Slovak (r ) Foundation / Association " ) is the National Institute of Culture of Slovakia, based in Martin. It is funded in large part by donations, sponsors and the like.

The Matica was founded in 1863 as an expression of the Slovak national cultural consciousness as a national institution of all Slovaks. The statute for its creation was approved on August 21, 1862 by Emperor Franz Joseph I.. The first chairman was the Catholic bishop Štefan Moyzes, his deputy was the Protestant Bishop Karol Kuzmány. 1875 Matica was closed by the Hungarian government for " excessive Slovak attitude " and their confiscated by donations of the emperor and the Slovaks accumulated assets. After the creation of Czechoslovakia was founded in 1919 and re- worked until the birth of the Slovak Academy of Sciences ( 1942) virtually as a substitute for this institution ( the Matica has, inter alia, regulates the Slovak language ). After the Communists came in 1948 in Czechoslovakia to power, the tasks of the Matica have been greatly reduced, so that it worked as a kind of society, and a library for the care of the Slovak language. After the Velvet Revolution ( 1989), its remit was only partially extended.
