Matilda of Holstein
Mechthild von Holstein (* 1220 or 1225, † 1288 in Kiel ) was 1250-1252 Queen of Denmark.
Life
Mechthild - daughter of Adolf IV of Holstein - married in 1237 Abel, who was from 1250 to 1252 King of Denmark. The couple had four children:
- Waldemar III. Abelson, Duke of Schleswig
- Eric I, Duke of Schleswig (also: Erik I. )
- Sophie of Denmark
- Abel Abelsen.
After Abel's death in 1252 married Matilda of Holstein and Birger Jarl - on both sides in a second marriage - in Bjälbo (Sweden). The marriage came from Christina Birgersdotter.
In a deed dated May 12, 1260 Mechthild von Holstein pledged together with their two sons, Erich I. and Abel Abelsen their land Stapelholm, Fræzlæt, Schwansen and the Crown Estate Jarnwith to the Dukes of Holstein Johann I and I. Gerhard mentioned in the certificate is the fortress of Rendsburg, which Mechthild had received as dowry.
Mechthild von Holstein is buried in Varnhem monastery church in Varnhem at Skara / Västergötland in Sweden.
