Matosinhos is a city ( Cidade ) in the Portuguese region of Norte. It is located about ten kilometers northwest of Porto on the Atlantic. Matosinhos is the seat of an eponymous district ( concelho ) with 174 931 inhabitants in an area of 62.2 km ². (As at 30 June 2011)

The place is known as a port and industrial city in the metropolitan region of Porto. Nationally, the place is also known in the context of sport or its beaches. History

Finds indicate the presence of humans since the Paleolithic, prehistoric settlement occupied since at least the Neolithic period. A Bronze Age settlement of the Castro culture was taken and occupied by the Romans. A Roman road from Cale (now Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto ) to Bracara oppidum Augusta (nowadays Braga) was here.

In the late Early Middle Ages, it was the monastery Mosteiro de Bouças. The present town was first mentioned in 900 as Mate sinus. In 1258 it was listed as Matusiny in the royal registers, as the site of the circle Sandim. King D.Manuel I gave Matosinhos 1514 first town rights.

1853 Matosinhos was raised to Vila ( town ) last circle Bouças, and in 1867 it became the seat of a separate circuit ( concelho ). Economy
