Mats Hallin

Mats Hallin ( born March 19, 1958 in Eskilstuna ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player ( left winger ), who played from 1982 to 1986 for the New York Islanders and Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League.

Career

Early age of 16 he played in the third Swedish League in Åkers IF. He moved to Södertälje SK in the Elitserien. Due to strong performances in the junior national team you became aware of him in North America. In the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 it chose the Washington Capitals in the seventh round as 105th out.

But his goal in the NHL were not the capital, but the New York Islanders. With Anders Kallur and Stefan Persson, the Islanders already had two players from Sweden, with whom they had won the Stanley Cup. Hallin did not succeed right away at the Islanders themselves. After one season with the Indianapolis Checkers in the Central Hockey League, he managed during the 1982/83 season but the jump to the Islanders. When the team took the fourth Stanley Cup in a row, he was there and after his teammates Kallur, Persson and Tomas Jonsson of the Swedish fourth Stanley Cup winners of NHL history.

After three years with the Islanders, he joined the 1985/86 season to the Minnesota North Stars. Shortly after beginning his second season there, he returned to Europe and played for HC Lugano. In 1987 he returned to Södertälje. Two years later he moved into the second Swedish league for the emerging Malmo IF. The team rose up in his first season. After 1992 he became Swedish champion with Malmö, he ended his active career.
