Mats Waltin

Mats Stefan Waltin ( born October 7, 1953 in Stockholm ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player, coach and functionary. Waltin played in his time, among other things for the Djurgårdens IF and Södertälje SK in the Elitserien. Since the 2010/11 season he coached the team of VIK Västerås HK from the HockeyAllsvenskan.

Career

Mats Waltin began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the junior department of the Djurgårdens IF. However, his professional career began at the defender Södertälje SK, for which he was Elitserien 1972-1978 active initially in Division 1 and then its successor competition. In the 1975/76 season he was doing the Guldpucken as the best Swedish player. After his involvement in Södertälje, he returned to Stockholm for Djurgårdens IF, with whom he first runner-up, and in the 1982/83 season was the first time in his career, Swedish Champion in 1979.

From 1984 to 1987 Waltin played for the first time abroad, when he ran aground for HC Lugano in the Swiss National League A. With this he won the 1986 and 1987 respectively the national championship. Following this success, he joined Lugano League rivals EV train for two more years. Then, the long-time Swedish national team returned to Sweden, where he was from 1989 to 1991 for his two former clubs Södertälje SK and IF Djurgårdens on the ice. With the latter in 1990 he was the second time the Swedish championship. Following the 1990/91 season, he ended his active career.

From 1991 to 1998 supervised Waltin as assistant coach his club Djurgårdens IF. During this time he took over as head of the Swiss club HC Davos as successor to the Canadian Lance Nethery. Waltin stood from 1992 to 1996 as head coach at the Davosern behind the band and managed at this time with the HC Davos 's re-emergence in the highest league. For the next three years he was promoted to head coach at Djurgårdens IF, where he was from 1999 to 2001 the post with the former Swedish national coach Hardy Nilsson told, which Waltin served as Team Manager Sweden at the 2002 World Cup itself. As head coach, he succeeded in 2000 and 2001 two more league titles with Djurgården. Then he spent one season in the management of the association.

In summer 2004, he signed a contract as head coach of the EC KAC in the Austrian Hockey League, has already been released on 31 October 2005 at the start of his second season with the Klagenfurtern, though he was in the previous year with his team's runner-up. In the following years, the former two-time Olympian pulled something back from active daily business. Only for the World Cup 2008 he took over as coach of the year had risen from the Slovenian national team Division I, but its chances of descent could not prevent.

Since the season 2010/ 11 is Waltin head coach at VIK Västerås HK in the HockeyAllsvenskan, the Swedish second division.

Internationally

For Sweden Waltin participated in the World Championships 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1983 and 1985. In addition, he was in the squad of his country at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and in Sarajevo in 1984, and in the years 1976 and 1981 the Canada Cup. After his playing career he was responsible for Sweden at the 2002 World Cup as Team Manager and in the World Cup 2008, the Slovenian national team as head coach.
