Matsalu National Park

The Matsalu National Park is located in western Estonia. Its area is 486.1 km ². It includes the area around the Bay of Matsalu, the surrounding land areas, the lower reaches of the river Kasari and the species-rich sea area Väinameri with over 50 islands.

Area

The nature reserve Matsalu was founded in 1957, considerably enlarged in 2004 and upgraded to National Park. Today it to include the wildlife sanctuaries of Puhtu - Lahelatu and Nehatu and landscape protection areas of Tuhu and Lihula. 2003 the National Park Matsalu by the Euro Europe was awarded the " European Diploma of Protected Areas " award.

The administrative center is located in the village Penijõe, 3 km from Lihula ( Lääne ).

Flora and Fauna

The national park was established primarily as a sanctuary for many species of birds. Today, 275 of birds, 49 fish and 47 mammal species recorded. In addition, there is a rich flora with 772 partly rare plant species.

Islands

In addition, the National Park for its stunning islands is known. The largest islands are Tauksi, Liia, Sõmeri, Kumari, Papilaid, Sipelgarahu and Tondirahu.
