In his first game against the Minnesota Wild scored his first goal Carle. He was the tenth player in Sharks history to have managed.

During the season 2006 /07, Carle became a fixture in San José and filled an important role in the powerplay game. After weaker performance in December 2006 he was sent on 2 January 2007 in the American Hockey League to the Worcester Sharks, the farm team of San Jose. His first full NHL season, he finished as the top scoring rookie defenseman in the league by a wide margin over second-placed. This earned him election to the NHL All- Rookie Team. The performances from the previous season, he could not repeat in the season 2007 /08. Through many mistakes in the defensive play and a clear deterioration in the offensive area of the defenders came under increasing criticism and lost at times, his place after he had received a well-endowed new contract in the summer of 2007. As a result, he was transferred in the course of a break on the defensive the Sharks together with Ty Wishart and two draft picks for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich to the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, these separated only a few games into the 2008/ 09 season inside of him when they issued him together with one of the two obtained from San Jose draft picks for Steve Eminger and Steve Downie of the Philadelphia Flyers.
