Matt Cohen (writer)

Matthew " Matt" Cohen ( born December 30, 1942 in Montreal, Quebec, † December 2, 1999 in Toronto ) was a Canadian writer, who published under the pseudonym Teddy Jam.

Life

Cohen was born in 1942 in Montreal and grew up in Kingston, Ontario on. He studied Political Economy at the University of Toronto and taught in the late 1960s, political philosophy and religion at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, before he published his first novel in 1969 Korsoniloff, which includes many other novels and stories for children and adolescents followed. His children 's books published posthumously Cohen under the pseudonym Teddy Jam revealed. Cohen wrote his own lyrics in English, but in addition also translated works of French- Canadian authors into English.

In 1973, Cohen of the founding members of the Writers' Union of Canada, which he was president in 1986, and was also active in the Toronto Arts Council.

For his latest novel, Elizabeth and After (Eng. The Letter ), Cohen received in 1999 a few weeks before his death with the Governor General's Award for Fiction the most prestigious Canadian literary award.

Matt Cohen died in late 1999 in Toronto, Ontario, at a cancer. He is survived by his wife Patsy Aldana and two children together. A younger brother Cohen was in 1992 also died of lung cancer; whose death is at the back of his penultimate novel Last Seen (Eng. Last meeting ) about the intense relationship between two brothers.

In honor of Cohen, endowed with $ 20,000 Matt Cohen Award is awarded by the Writers' Trust of Canada annually since 2000.
