Matt Mitchell

Matt Mitchell ( born March 16, 1957 in Berkeley, California ) is a former American professional tennis player.

Life

Mitchell studied at Stanford University and was elected to the best selection of All-American three times. He was 1977 NCAA tennis champion. In the same year he won with the team the NCAA title that was defended the following year. Mitchell was building in the doubles at the side of John McEnroe.

In 1979 he became a professional tennis player and was able to win it with McEnroe in Brisbane his first ATP doubles title of the year. In the following two years he won another doubles title. 1984 was his most successful year. On the side of Francisco González, he won three doubles titles, including the Masters Tournament of Cincinnati. He also won in Melbourne by a final victory against the favored Pat Cash his only individual title on the ATP World Tour after he had been defeated in the previous year in his first finals in Cleveland Marty Davis. In total he won during his career seven ATP doubles titles, three more times he stood in a double finals. Its highest listing in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1985 with position 53 in the singles and in 1984 with position 30 in doubles.

His best individual performance in a Grand Slam tournaments were two third- round appearances at the Australian Open. In the doubles competition in 1986, he stood at the side of Kevin Curren in the semifinals of the U.S. Open, where they lost in five sets against Mats Wilander and Joakim Nystrom.
