Matt Molloy

Matt Molloy ( born January 12, 1947 in Ballaghadereen, County Roscommon, Ireland) is an Irish flautist.

Life

Molloy comes from a family with great musical tradition. At eight, he began to play the flute and won at 17, the All-Ireland Flute Championship and achieved initial recognition in National Fleadh Cheoil and Oireachtas. In the early 1970s he moved to Dublin where he met many musicians from the scene to know, among other things Chieftains Paddy Moloney of the. After his marriage, he had a job at the first Aer Lingus, before becoming in 1975 a co-founder of the later legendary Bothy band. The other members were Donal Lunny (ex Planxty ), Paddy Keenan, Triona NiDhomhnaill and Michael O'Dhomhnaill. Published four albums of the band in four and a half years.

After the dissolution in 1978 Matt played with briefly in the reformed band Planxty, but with their albums could not repeat her earlier successes. After two albums and a tour Molloy got out. When Michael Tubridy and Sean Potts 1979 got off at the Chieftains, Paddy Moloney invited him to the vacant space flute and Matt Molloy told.

The first album with Molloy was Chieftains 9: Boil The Breakfast Early. Since then, listen to Matt Molloy member of the Chieftains and all the band's albums. Culmination of a Chieftains concert has long been Molloy's solo appearance with The Mason 's Apron ( heard on the live album An Irish Evening ).

During his time as a professional musician Matt Molloy has recorded several solo albums and has been involved in many projects.

In addition to his career as a musician Matt Molloy operates for years has its own pub in Westport, County Mayo, named Matt Molloy's, often taking place in the music sessions.
