Matteo Bartoli

Matteo Giulio Bartoli ( born November 22, 1873 in Labin, † January 23, 1946 in Turin ) was an Italian linguist, linguists and Dialektologe.

Life and work

Bartoli studied with Wilhelm Meyer- Lübke and Adolf Mussafia in Vienna, Heinrich Hübschmann in Strasbourg and at Jules Gilliéron in Paris. His two- volume work on the extinct Dalmatian language of his native Istrian earned him 1907, the lifetime appointment to the chair for " Storia delle lingue Comparata classiche e neolatine " from 1925 for " Linguistica " and from 1939 for " Glottologia " the University of Turin. From 1926 he was co-editor of the journal Archivo Glottologico Italiano. Bartoli was an important theorist of language geography ( " linguistica areal " or " linguistica spaziale " ) and initiator of the Italian Linguistic Atlas (Atlante Linguistico Italiano, ALI). With him temporarily studied Antonio Gramsci. Among his pupils was Benvenuto Terracini.

Bartoli's main conclusion is: "Central areas ( aree centrali ) of Romania are more innovative than lateral areas ( aree laterali ), or get innovations from the central regions of late or not up to the lateral " ( Bochmann 1994, p 362).
