Matteo Bassi

Mateo de Bascio (* 1495 in Bascio, † 1552 in Venice ) was an Italian religious reformer and founder of the Capuchin Order in the Renaissance.

Life

Mateo joined the Franciscans in 1525 and went to Rome. There he received from Pope Clement VII as a personal privilege of the right to a robe with pointed hood ( cappuccio ) to wear to preach and at the same time to follow strict rules of poverty in emulation of Saint Francis. With a small group of followers, he founded the Capuchin Order and was the Vicar General ( 1529). After he had secured about clarity that the establishment of a new order did not meet his original intentions, he took the itinerant preaching again and later returned to the Franciscans. He accompanied the imperial troops in the Battle of Miihlberg ( 1547) and died in Venice.
