Matteo Garrone

Matteo Garrone (* 15 October 1968 in Rome ) is an Italian film director and screenwriter.

Biography

Matteo Garrone is the son of theater critic Nico Garrone and a photographer. In 1986 he graduated from the school in an arts high school in Rome and then painted several years. First film experience he gained as a cameraman. His directorial debut was the short film Silhouette ( 1996), with whom he won donated by Nanni Moretti Sacher Award, named after his favorite cake Sacher-Torte. At the same time he also founded his own production company Archimede. His first feature film Terra di mezzo linked short film episodes about Albanian immigrants and Nigerian prostitutes in Rome. The mixture of documentary and fictional material was the starting point for the first feature film with a similar theme, Ospiti.

Garrone film Primo amore ran in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival 2004 under the title Body of Love. Against the film Gegen die Wand by Fatih Akın but he could not prevail.

In 2008, his film adaptation of Roberto Saviano's novel about the Camorra celebrated under the title Gomorrah - journey into the realm of the Camorra in Cannes premiere. The film was for the main prize of the festival, the Palme d'Or nominated and won the Grand Jury Prize. Months later, the film was selected as the official Italian contribution for the nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2009, nominated for a Golden Globe Award and awarded in five categories at the award ceremony of the European Film Awards in 2008, including film, director and screenplay.

After the success of Gomorrah Garrone presented his 2012 feature film Reality finish, where he was inspired by the hit TV show Grande Fratello, the Italian version of Big Brother. The film tells the story of a fishmonger from Naples ( represented by Aniello Arena), which says so much for the series that he lives his life as if he were the star of Grande Fratello. Occupied for Reality, with Claudia Gerini, Ciro Petrone and Arturo Gambardella in the leading roles, Garrone received in 2012 his second invitation to compete in the International Film Festival of Cannes, where he was again awarded the Grand Jury Prize. In the same year Garrone was appointed to the jury of the 69th International Film Festival of Venice.
