Matthew Henry Richey

Matthew Henry Richey, QC ( born June 10, 1828 in Windsor, Nova Scotia, † February 21, 1911 ) was a Canadian politician. He was twice mayor of the city of Nova Scotia, Member of the Canadian House of Commons and Deputy Governor of the province of Nova Scotia.

Biography

Richey was the son of an immigrant from Northern Ireland Methodist preacher. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1850, after which he opened a law firm in Halifax. In 1858 he was elected to the City Council of Halifax, where he remained for five years. In 1864 he was elected mayor, he held this office until 1867. His second term as mayor lasted from 1875 to 1878.

Richey ran as the candidate of the Liberal - Conservative party to the general election in 1878 and then represented the electoral district of Halifax. In 1882 he succeeded in re-election. He gave up his seat in Parliament, Lord Lorne as Governor General sworn him in 1883 as Vice- Governor of the province of Nova Scotia. This representative office he held for five years.
