Matthew Linn Bruce

Matthew Linn Bruce ( born October 1, 1860 in Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, † February 26, 1936 in Albany, Albany County, New York) was an American lawyer, judge and politician ( Republican).

Career

Matthew Linn Bruce visited the Andes Academy. He graduated in 1884 Rutgers College with a Bachelor of Arts, where he gave also the farewell speech. He then studied law in the office of Cassius M. Shaw in Andes, where he was admitted to the bar in 1889. Bruce moved in 1890 to New York City. He was there until 1892 worked as a senior clerk in the law firm of Hector M. Hitchings, then when he opened his own law practice. Bruce was 1903 president of the New York County Republican Committee. He also led an unsuccessful campaign for Mayor Seth Low for reelection.

Bruce was 1905-1906 Vice- governor of New York. During his re-election attempt in November 1906, he suffered a defeat, though his running mate Charles Evans Hughes was elected governor. All other Republican candidates were defeated by the nominees of the Democratic / Independence League. On December 5, 1906, he resigned from his position as vice- governor back. Governor Frank W. Higgins appointed him judge of the New York Supreme Court, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Judge Morgan J. O'Brien. Bruce held the post until the end in 1907. In the following year he went back to his work as a lawyer after. However, he was re- appointed on 13 October of the same year by Governor Hughes to the Supreme Court, this time to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Judge David Leven kick. Bruce held the position until the end of the year. In his candidacy in November 1908 for the same post at the Supreme Court, he suffered against the Democratic candidate Irving Lehman defeat.

Family

Matthew Linn Bruce was the son of Dr. James Bruce and Mary ( Linn ) Bruse (ca. 1830-1907 ). He married Lillian 1894 ( Ballantine ) Knapp. The couple had four children together.
