Matthew Nathan

Sir Matthew Nathan GCMG ( born January 3, 1862 in Paddington, London, † April 18, 1939 in West Coker, England ) was a British officer and colonial administrator.

Life

Matthew Nathan was born as the son of the merchant Jonah Nathan and his wife Mirian Jacob Nathan. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and after registering with the Royal Engineers from 1880 to 1884 at the Royal Engineers' School.

He participated in the 1884 /85 a Militärexpedtion in Sudan and from 1889 to 1894 in British India. In 1889 he was promoted to captain. Between 1896 and 1898 he was chairman of the Colonial Defence Committee and was promoted to Major in 1898 also. From 1899 to 1900 he was deputy governor of Sierra Leone. In 1900 he became governor of the Gold Coast and remained so until 1903. During the same year, he became Governor of Hong Kong, he held this office until 1907 where he became in the same year Governor of Natal until 1909. Afterwards, he returned to England and held various offices of, among other things, he was under-Secretary for Ireland ( under- Secretary for Ireland).

In 1920 was appointed Governor of Queensland and held that post until 1925. He then returned to England and spent his retirement in Somerset.

Others

The municipality Nathan, Queensland, Australia, and some roads, such as the Nathan Road, the main street of Kowloon in Hong Kong, were named after him.
