Matthias Wiegand

Matthias Wiegand ( born April 22, 1954 in Plauen ) is a former racing cyclist from East Germany. In 1980, he won an Olympic silver medal in the team pursuit, for which he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Wiegand started cycling at the BSG craft Plauen and later moved to SC Karl- Marx-Stadt. In 1970, he won on the road at the Spartakiade, 1972, he won on the road and in the individual pursuit. In 1973, he finished in the GDR championship in cross country second behind Günter Mosch. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Wiegand appeared with the train of four of the DDR in his first major championship; together with Norbert Dürpisch, Thomas Huschke and Uwe Unterwalder he finished fourth.

At the World Cup 1977 in San Cristóbal GDR four first won a major title, the team with Norbert Dürpisch, Gerald Mortag, Matthias Wiegand and Volker Winkler defeated in the final of the four from the Federal Republic of Germany. A year later at the World Championships in Munich could Mortag, Unterwalder, Wiegand and Winkler success through a final victory over the Soviet four repeat. 1979 did not belong to the Wiegand DDR - four at the World Championships, but he won his first East German championship title in the team pursuit. 1980 repeated the foursome from SC Karl- Marx-Stadt its success in the GDR Championship. At the Olympic Games in 1980 Mortag, Unterwalder, Wiegand and Winkler were subject to Soviet four in the final.

Matthias Wiegand is a graduate sports teacher. In GDR times, he was a research assistant at the Teacher Training College in Zwickau, he has worked at a rehabilitation company since 1997.
